The Presentation is entitled "Through My Daughter's Eyes...Through My Mother's Eyes...Growing Up With Down syndrome..A Mother and Daughter's Reflection on Inclusion"
This talk will give participants an opportunity to hear the perspective of a young woman with Down syndrome who has grown up in an inclusive environment as well as her mother's perspective as parent and educator having worked as an advocate and professional in the education system.
Speaker Bios
Janet Charchuk:
Janet is a 29 year old woman who has Down Syndrome. She is a self advocate with Voices at the Table with the Canadian Down Syndrome Society. She is a motivational speaker and has spoken to groups across Canada and even in Washington, DC. She lives in supportive living apartment and works at a day care. Her interests include advocacy work, fitness and Special Olympics, music, hanging out with family and friends, and travelling.
Jackie Charchuk:
Jackie is a retired educator having worked as special education/resource teacher and special education consultant with Western School Board in PEI for over 30 years. She has been volunteer with the Association for Community Living, Community Inclusions and is currently on the board of directors for CDSS. Her interests include gardening, sailing, reading and travelling.
DIRECTIONS: The Auxillary Theatre is on the side of the Hospital closest to the new Stan Cassidy Rehab Centre. There is free parking if you enter the "Service Entrance" from Priestman street. Go through the security gate and the free parking lot will be on the right. After you're in the building follow the signs for the Theatre.
